Meanwhile, the old kids' department was seemingly being used as a publicly-accessible stockroom, with boxed appliances and bagged mattresses on full display alongside disused fixtures. If I showed someone this picture in isolation, they'd probably think it was taken during a store closing sale, but this store remained open for nearly two more years after this! There were also lots of light fixtures hanging open like this, as if someone had started changing the dead lightbulbs but never finished the job (in more ways than one, considering how many dead lights are visible in these pictures).
