Lifestyle carts in a post-Lifestyle world

I was a bit amused to see that this store, built years after Sobey's buyout of the Canadian Safeways, still had Safeway's Lifestyle-era beige carts. Either Sobey's continued to buy these long after Safeway/Albertsons moved on to newer designs, or these were recycled from an older store. It's a bit odd to see new-build stores with used carts, but I've seen Safeway do that around here too!

  1. The carts we used at the Safeways we went to in Oregon and California on our latest trip all seemed to be new and in very good condition! It's been a while since I've seen a badly mistracking cart at Randall's, but still, the carts on vacation seemed to be in better shape!

My local Krogertsons must have recently received some long-retired carts from some Kroger warehouse. A lot of them had those cell phone holders, which have not been used in years, and some even had the handles which had the two old Kroger logos on them. Those might well be 15-20 years old!

    1. Yeah, Safeway seems to have finally run out of the old carts they had laying around somewhere, since they have been finally giving stores new carts recently. And it seems like cart theft must be less of a problem than it used to be, since my local store has managed to hang on to its mixed fleet of red and beige carts for quite a while now (or maybe theft was never the problem and the random used carts they were getting were just junk and needed to be replaced constantly!).
