This little passageway is the only connection between the grand aisle and the main salesfloor, and it's immediately blocked by the pharmacy island (with bulk food shelving, selling pre-packaged "bulk" foods just like American Safeways, on its back). None of the Grocery Palaces I've ever visited have had the true original layout, which was criticized for having tons of displays and islands that were in the way and messed up any logical shopping flow, but I imagine shopping in this store feels a bit like those old Albertsons.
