Welcome to the Burquitlam Safeway!

It seems like I've been focusing a lot on the vintage aspects of retail on the blog lately, so it's about time for something a bit newer! This store opened in 2017 (sadly replacing a very vintage Marina store) as part of a mixed-use development following the opening of the Millenium Line's Evergreen Extension (the viaduct for which is sticking into the top left corner of this picture). It's a very Canadian mixed-use development -- rather than having a few stories of apartments above the store, as we've seen several times in Seattle, this place has a stand-alone store with two residential towers tacked onto the sides. These sort of suburban towers placed in the middle of low-density development are such a specifically Canadian thing, one that you don't really see in most parts of the world.

Fun fact number 1: Burquitlam isn't a traditional place name as it might sound -- it's a portmanteau of Burnaby (just to the west) and Coquitlam (where this store is actually located). But it seems to have become a standard neighborhood name for this area (on both sides of the city line), and the SkyTrain station near this store is called Burquitlam Station.

Fun fact number 2: The signal at the left is at the intersection of Clarke Rd and Como Lake Ave. Yep, there's a Como Lake in Coquitlam, though it's nowhere near as impressive and beautiful as the actual Lake Como in Italy. This set will fill in until my European vacation in just under a month. Will I revisit Lake Como on this trip? We'll see! Unlike my previous Italian adventures, I don't have full control over what I'm doing this time around.
