Front end, from the other end

Overall, I think the front end looks quite nice too, especially with the hanging things that add a bit of visual interest in a way that (as far as I'm aware) Safeway hasn't ever tried before. The register lights are nice too, and somewhat less bland than the Lifestyle-era boxes or Modern cylinders (and certainly way better than Kroger's cubes). The black and red color scheme makes me think of Winn-Dixie's newer decor packages!

Ha, Winn-Dixie isn't what I think of when I see this scene. Target is more like it! The register lights remind me of the square ones used by some grocers in the 1980s. Here's a photo of a Randall's Flagship in 1987 (pre-Safeway, obviously) which has those types of square lights: https://s.hdnux.com/photos/71/62/25/15148392/3/1200x0.jpg

You can probably see why Randall's of that era has a legendary reputation! The Roth's Fresh Market in West Salem, OR, and maybe all the Roth's, have the square signs as well. These stores were inspired by Tom Thumb (Tom Thumb's Simon David stores specifically) and Randall's, so the Randall's inspired signs aren't a surprise. While it isn't a hanging piece of decor, the Tom Thumb in Dallas that is a former The Fresh Market and which uses some recycled decor does have a fancy front end. I like the Dallas one better, but obviously that isn't original Safeway decor: https://maps.app.goo.gl/raF2LMM1hqAnDwUe7

    1. Yeah, this has a real Target look to it! The register lights don't look like anything I've seen from Target, though -- they tend to stick to red and white, not red and black.

I love those ex-Fresh Market stores! It would be cool to see one in person some day, but there really isn't much else that is of interest to me in the Dallas area.
