The corridor branching off to the left leads to the weird alley between Sears and the new part of the mall. The store on the left is currently being converted into a "luxury pod hotel" (I'm not sure how that's going to work since it's located in a mall, and I'm pretty sure that a pod hotel can't be luxury, but whatever), while the kiosk on the right is now home to a police/security setup (though thankfully I've never seen any police or security people actually using it). The Sears second-story entrance is directly overhead.
Ha, I had the same look on my face when I read "luxury pod hotel" as I did when I read "luxury concrete floors" many years ago! I'm not sure how that works, but I'm guessing it is one of those way-overpriced for what you get hotels. Even some ordinary hotels these days have some design oddities. I stayed at a new hotel during my trip this past summer which was quite nice, but it has a very strange bathroom door design. Instead of a real door, it has a sliding barn door which is very heavy and which doesn't completely cover the gaps in the doorway so you can see and smell into the bathroom even when the door is closed! What kind of design is that?! I hear that barn door bathrooms like that aren't uncommon at new hotels these days, along with other bathroom design oddities. Oh well, I guess these things make sense to somebody, lol.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's on the same level as "luxury microapartments"! That's what my first apartment (the 250-square-foot place in Fremont) was branded as; I didn't take the bait but ended up living there anyway since it was the cheapest place I could find in a decent neighborhood. "Luxury" is one of those meaningless marketing buzzwords these days -- well, I suppose it always has been, but I feel like it's getting worse!
DeleteYeah, those barn doors seem to be a trend in new hotels. I don't get it either! I hardly ever stay at new-build hotels these days since hotel rooms in general are so expensive compared to just a few years ago, so I don't think I've ever stayed in one with those doors, but my parents have several times.
