Front end

Unfortunately, Safeway didn't bother doing anything special for the front end here -- they didn't even install a proper sign for the customer service department, leaving lots of blank wall space around the lone thank you sign. Modern's boring self/express checkout signs look even more cheap and boring in this store!

Huh, that price accuracy guarantee sign is interesting because it certainly isn't something we have at Randall's! If those policies exist at Randall's, they aren't advertised. I wonder if California, or this part of California, have some kind of laws requiring those policies and for them to be advertised. I also wonder why dairy products are excluded from the guarantee. I can understand stuff like alcohol and gas, but I'm not sure what's special about dairy. It is possible that is required to meet USDA regional milk pricing standards, but I don't know.

If alcohol is prohibited for sale at self-checkouts in Texas, retailers here (especially Kroger) have found ways around it! I know Fiesta Mart has a policy forbidding alcohol sales at self-checkouts, but I don't know if other retailers have policies like that. I obviously don't use self-checkouts very often and I also don't buy alcohol very often! Given that this store appears to have three manned checkouts which are open, I'd unquestioningly head to a manned checkout anyway!

    1. Yeah, that seems to be a California thing. So is the alcohol at self checkouts thing, and the dairy regulation might be part of that too. California is famously full of weird regulations!
