Back in the early 00s, when I was really into architecture and interior design and bought all sorts of architecture-related books and magazines (perfectly normal behavior for an elementary schooler, right? But hey, I remember seeing those amazing Best stores in those books, and that's probably why I ended up getting into retail!), I remember green and orange color schemes being briefly trendy. Apparently, those days live on at Save-On! I thought that was a pretty ugly color scheme back then, and it still is here. Also, using orange for the pickup section seems like a total Walmart knock-off! Surprisingly, the whole drive-through pickup setup is actually original to Safeway, where it was marked as "parcel pickup only" (though it doesn't seem like they were really using it). Unsurprisingly, the arbor in the foreground also dates back to the Safeway Lifestyle era.
Ha, fortunately, if we have/had any green and orange stores like this, they've either gone out of business or changed their colors because I can't think of anything! It is kind of a shame that a store which is quite nice on the inside has a color scheme that makes it look like a Grocery Outlet or WinCo type of store, but oh well. I guess there is that old saying about judging books by their covers!
ReplyDeleteGiven that the first of those SITE Best Products stores was in Houston, I wouldn't blame you for being motivated by them! The Indeterminate Facade Best Products in Houston across from Almeda Mall probably wasn't the 'best' looking of the SITE Best Products stores, but it was certainly still interesting! I say was because although the building is still around, it is now a fenced-in warehouse and the special facade was dismantled about 20 years ago. Best Products was a pretty neat store, even the regular ones. We shopped there quite a bit, but you know I liked those catalog showrooms!
