I may not have much use for salad bars or olive bars or soup bars or, well, bars, all of which are things grocery chains have tried time and time again... but a candy bar (pun intended) is more my sort of thing! Of course, plenty of stores have bulk candy for sale, but normally just as a small portion of a bulk foods department primarily focused on healthier options -- not so much at Save-On-Foods, which has practically an entire old-fashioned candy store (even with an old-fashioned-candy-store color scheme) sitting between liquor and floral. I particularly like the illuminated pinwheel lollipop signs! (They remind me more of mints than lollipops, but still.)
Since the demise of Rice Epicurean supermarkets here in Houston with their See's Candies department, it is unlikely we'll see anything like this 'candy bar'. Having said that, Spec's Liquors & Finer Foods took over the space of the last Rice Epicurean when Rice Epicurean finally threw in the towel a couple of years ago and Spec's retained the See's Candies shop so I suppose we might actually have something like this at a liquor store of all places! Hopefully the candy in this display is cheaper than the See's stuff, lol. Of course, I probably wouldn't buy any of it even if it was cheap.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine this was anywhere near the insane prices See's is charging these days! I like See's, but it's just not really worth the price these days, plus they've closed most of the locations that are actually convenient for me.
