Old Dutch

I just had to get a picture of the famous Canadian ketchup chips out on one of the endcaps! My Canadian manager absolutely loves these... I've never tried them, but I don't like ketchup on its own so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like these either. I thought the boxes on the right were Old Dutch-branded ketchup, but apparently they're just two bags of chips stuffed into a box for some reason -- I've never seen chips sold like that before.

I can't say I've ever had Old Dutch potato chips before. I've had Lay's ketchup chips in Canada and it seemed that in eastern Canada at least, Lay's was the brand of choice at the supermarkets. I find it a bit odd that they're selling salsa next to potato chips as salsa is generally considered to go with tortilla/corn chips here in Texas at least!

I don't really understand the bags in a box potato chips. It seems like a lot of redundant packaging. Reading the boxes, it seems that they are actually sold on environmental grounds given that the bags inside, and the box too I suppose, are recyclable. Well, that may very well be true, but the whole idea is to reduce the amount of packaging so that things do not have to be recycled since recycling is an energy-intensive process itself. I'm not sure about the wisdom behind that one!

    1. Old Dutch seems to be a big deal in the western part of Canada, at least. Strangely, they're actually a Minnesota-based company, but they seem to be much more common in Canada than the US!

I don't know what the deal is with the salsa, but it's Old Dutch brand, so it seems to be intended to go with the potato chips. Maybe that's another weird Canadian thing...

I think the double boxes are just their way of selling a two-pack (similar to the larger-sized bags of chips available here), but it is pretty wasteful! But companies do a lot of wasteful things that they then turn around and try to sell as environmentally friendly...
