Looking away from the floor for a moment, the aisle markers at this store are quite unusual too. The markers themselves are a bit boring, but instead of being hung over the aisles in one way or another, they're hanging over the shelves and have different content on each side. Notice how all four of the aisle markers visible in this picture are for aisle 3! I've never seen anything like this before -- it's conceptually similar to the shelving-mounted ones used by Rite Aid or the endcap-mounted ones used by Target, but hanging from the ceiling instead. If I was actually using the aisle markers to navigate the store, I think I would find that quite confusing -- not because there's anything intrinsically wrong with the idea, but just because it goes against what I'm used to from every other grocery store I've ever shopped at!
I've long said that my favorite retail flooring is any type of vinyl other than plain white... but this tests that a bit! Save-On-Foods has long used distinctive bright green flooring in the main aisles; it made sense with most of their previous decor packages, but it looks massively out of place here. The overall aesthetic of this store is classy, upscale, and dark (not unlike the original Lifestyle aesthetic), and then you get into the main aisles and your eyes are assaulted by fluorescent flooring. At least the actionways and perimeter all have nice woodgrain flooring!

Lime green and fake wood are certainly a strange combination! The 'loud' center aisles remind me a bit of Grocery Palace floors, but even then, this is quite different. Well, it is still better than concrete, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteWhile the shade of green is quite different, this does remind me a bit of the Sears stores which had patches of green vinyl flooring in the lawn & garden/seasonal departments where they'd put lawnmowers and such! Of course, that was something they did in around the 1980s, but it was pretty unique looking and a nice way to display lawn equipment!
It's better than white vinyl too, but still, it's really out there!
DeleteI did like that green Sears flooring, though what I really remember is the mats that sat on top of the normal flooring rather than actual built-in green vinyl.
The green mats are what Sears used in more recent years (decades I suppose, lol), but at some older stores, they actually had green vinyl tiles fixed to the floor. Here is an example of that at the former Westwood Mall Sears in Houston: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlGqTCk3rznCw_NONH2wVXD5ukCm3_zbbvCUYS0VWJhtgsiJqh9xItYdvNdPGm5haooFV6_Cbh7VqK39xHcb9j88LKdBtVNVLGtaB26LcM5vbt5-DvVuHFyS4y9BInifqwxMca5Il7pQo/s1600/20170924_172406.jpg
DeleteI had no idea you could even buy floor tiles in that color! Lime green is certainly an interesting choice considering the rest of the decor uses the gray/black theme (it certainly pops!), but I guess Save-On didn't want to break with their flooring tradition.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's amazing how many colors commercial products like this come in! I imagine some of the more out there ones are only available in large orders, but the Home Depot sells something very similar to this. The manufacturer's website shows that product in over 100 colors, including 15 shades of green!
