Produce aisle

Produce is one part of the store that may not have changed much over its history -- it's still a relatively-narrow "aisle" running under the low part of the Marina roof, similar to most relatively-original Marina stores I've visited. It hasn't been spared from the invasion of gaudy beach chairs, umbrellas, and even what appear to be surfboards or paddleboards, however!

  1. I don't know, I think some Safeway Marina stores had really strange layouts when they were new! Maybe they weren't strange for the time, but check out these photos of Safeway Marina stores in Abilene, TX in the 1960s. Meat was on one side of the store, general merchandise (including clothing!) on the other side of the store in aisles going the opposite direction as the food aisles not unlike Albertsons Blue & Grey Market stores (though some of the aisles were oriented like the food aisles), frozen foods were kind of in the middle, but at the end of the food items before you got to general merchandise. Dairy was on the back wall, which perhaps isn't too strange by modern standards, but produce was on the back wall where we'd expect meat to be these days!

    1. Huh, interesting! I've seen so many Marina stores with similar layouts to this one that I just assumed it was the original setup. I wonder if there was a mass changeover at some point.
