Grand ceiling, sad store

At least the grand ceiling is still here, though at least one of the fancy light fixtures had gone missing -- I don't even know how that would happen. It looks like the fixtures are actually just glass dishes reflecting/diffusing the light from the can light above, which is an interesting way of doing things!

  1. It is rather amazing how many of the lights in this photo are actually working! There are some dark spots in the light box ring, but I'm not sure if that's because the lights are out there or maybe they're just dimmer for some reason. There are a few center tubes with are out in the regular store lights off to the right, but otherwise, most of the lights seem to be working fine. I've certainly seen more successful stores with more trouble keeping the lights working correctly than what we see here.

I know it wasn't uncommon for some Kmart stores to remove fluorescent tubes from their light fixtures in order to save on electrical costs. I can't really say I've seen any Sears in-person or in photos which did the same thing. Certainly Sears could save some money by not running all of those light box lights, but then things would look really bad! Then again, one does not have to look too hard to find non-lighting stuff in this store which looks bad, lol.

Where I work, I would estimate that about 40% of the recessed fluorescent lights don't work. Of the ones that do work, they are a mixture of warm color temperature tubes and cold ones (really nasty ones which give off a greenish color). On top of that, there are dead cockroachs which are clearly visible sitting on the top of the fixture lenses. Oh well, facilities' excuse is that due to the ceiling being very high, they would have to use a scissor lift to work on the lights and the only way to get a scissor lift onto the floor would be to remove all the furniture. It isn't an entirely invalid excuse, but things look better at this Sears than at our building!

    1. Yeah, despite all of the issues this store has, maintenance hasn't been neglected to the point it was at a lot of Kmarts. Of course, a fixture like this does a much better job of hiding dead bulbs than a normal fluorescent ceiling fixture would!
