In the green

The green-painted ceiling gives this part of the store a somewhat different feeling compared to what we've seen so far. I wish more stores with open ceilings would paint them colors like this, rather than always going with white or black! I've seen dark green ceilings in some stores before, but I really like this light color. Anyway, this escalator drops you right into the meat and seafood department, with another restaurant behind the plants on the right.

I think if grocers are going to use open ceilings, they ought to do more things like this. Some of the later Randall's New Generation stores from the late 1990s had hybrid drop/open ceilings with the open parts painted dark green, but as you say, this is really something entirely different. I still prefer a drop ceiling, but at least this does add a nice splash of color.

Now, having said all of this, in the more bizarre parts under the Albertsons umbrella, I will say this combination of a terrible concrete floor and a sky colored open ceiling at this United Supermarket location looks absolutely terrible. I think the floor has more to do with that terrible look than the ceiling, but it is hard to tell, lol. Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y31XuZA7p1HSRgwGA

    1. Dark green ceilings were a bit of a fad at that point -- I know Albertsons also used hybrid ceilings with dark green paint on the open portion in the Awnings era, and several chains (Genuardi's is one I can think of off the top of my head) used full dark green ceilings. The hybrid versions were fine, but I'm just not a fan of dark ceilings in general.

That is weird! I'm not sure how I feel about the faux sky, but it looks quite strange with how cheap everything else about that store is! I know of a few other stores with faux skies (though I haven't actually visited any of them), but they're higher-end places with decor to match. As bad as the worn-out stained concrete floor is, I think the wall decor is the worst part of that United Supermarket!
