Front end

I said yesterday that this store only had three checkouts, but looking at this picture, apparently it actually has four -- it's just that the fourth one is missing its number and instead just has a light bulb on a stick! Between that and aisle 3's marker that looks like it's about to fall on someone's head, things aren't looking all that presentable up here, especially considering that the store had been remodeled less than a year ago. Strangely, checkouts 3 and 4 are in the standard Safeway staggered express configuration, but the express checkout sign is all the way at the other end of the row (I can't quite tell if it's supposed to be pointing to lane 1 or 2 thanks to that awkward beam in the way).

Ha, between those register number shades, or lack thereof, and the crooked aisle marker, I suppose I'm glad that my local Randall's kept their old Lifestyle v2 aisle and register markers when it got Colorful Lifestyle v2! I suppose this is a timely photo with the light bulb as just a couple of days ago, I replaced a light bulb at the house with a new Signature Select one. At least that light has a shade though!

Is Safeway in your area still pricing bananas by weight or by the item? Randall's recently switched to pricing bananas by item, unfortunately. Given the popularity of Target's grocery department, I don't think Safeway should be looking at Target for grocery strategies!

On the topic of Randall's pricing bananas by item, their price is 4 for $1.00. Since two bananas weigh about a pound, that ends up being about the same as the 49 cents/lb. price that Kroger charges.

While doing this weighing of items not sold by a pound, I noticed that my local Randall's has set up a new digital produce scale in the middle of the produce department. It is not working yet, or it already stopped working, so it had an out of order sign it. Fortunately, the regular mini analog scales were still out and calibrated correctly. Anyway, digital scales may be coming to a Safeway near you!

Also, I noticed at Randall's that Tillamook now has frozen pizzas. The price was silly, something like $10 for a Red Baron-sized pizza. Randall's has the Signature Select rising crust frozen pizzas for $3.99 this week, but I guess if I want a taste of NW frozen pizza, I know where to go!

    2. I've never seen a Modern store look quite this worn-out before, even ones that were remodeled years earlier than this one! I have no idea what the deal is with this store, since it didn't have these problems before the remodel.

Apparently Safeway still sells bananas for 69 cents per pound here, though I haven't bought bananas in many years so I don't pay much attention. Interestingly, the website claims that works out to "approx" 23 cents each, which is actually cheaper than Randall's, if it's accurate!

Huh, I had no idea about Tillamook frozen pizzas! I haven't actually paid attention to frozen pizzas for a while, and hardly ever walk down that aisle at my local Safeway, so I have no idea if they sell them here or not (Safeway's website says they do, but it's not always trustworthy).
