Stepping inside (is a Sweet Deal)

Inside the store, things look just as 90s as on the outside! I probably wouldn't have sought out this store  -- as I said before, I tend to overlook independent stores like this -- but it was by the AirBNB I was staying at, and I'm certainly glad I decided to stop by one day.

  1. I'm glad, and a bit surprised, to see a post about Yokes! I know you don't like to do independent supermarkets and small chains, but this chain and Super 1 Foods (the NW one, not the Texas one which is a junky discount version of Brookshires) are both really interesting and I figured you'd like visiting them if you went to them. I think Super 1 Foods has a location in Spokane as well, but anyway, this Yokes is pretty neat so far. This scene kind of reminds me a bit of a more 1990s version of some of the late 1980s Fiesta Marts we have/had here in Houston with the fake windows and neon. That 'Cafe & Bakery' sign looks more like Proto Lifestyle, but it probably predates Proto Lifestyle. It also looks like this store has a more tasteful version of an open ceiling than what we often see. Maybe the difference is painting the ceiling the same color as the upper parts of the fascias, I don't know. It helps that it is a distinctive color.

BTW, I tried posting this in the other post, but Blogger wasn't having any part of that! We'll see if it works here.

    1. I ended up checking out a couple local chains when I was in Spokane last year (it feels like so much longer ago than just a year and a half!), but unfortunately Super 1 wasn't one of them -- I know I had considered it, but I just didn't make it there for one reason or another.

You're right that this has a bit of an 80s-meets-90s look to it. Yoke's opened quite a few stores in that general timeframe, and I wouldn't be surprised if they used the same decor with minimal modifications for quite some time, rather than creating complete new packages like larger chains would. I also agree that the painted ceiling looks nice, though I'm not a fan of the particular color they used here!
