As is often the case in ex-Grocery Palaces, this store has a lot of excess space up front! The customer service alcove itself is quite roomy, likely having absorbed space from the old video rental area, and the space out front is home to even more greeting cards and random beach supplies. The hatches and patches in the floor make me think the area in the foreground would have been home to more registers originally, maybe even into the PF&H era.
Huh, I think that is a '3's a Crowd' sign back behind the customer service desk. I wonder if that was still an active policy at this store at the time these photos were taken! Now that it is a Pavilions, I suppose they'd have even more reason to keep that policy, but I wouldn't be surprised if that has been discontinued here in modern times.
ReplyDeleteWow, nicely spotted -- I didn't notice that at all! I think Oregon Safeways might still do "3's a Crowd", but I don't believe this store did -- and the sign is clearly from the PF&H era, so I'm guessing it was put up when this store remodeled and never got taken down. That being said, the California stores I visited generally seemed to have much better checkout staffing than my local stores do!
