Liquor • Wines

This feels like quite a large liquor section for an 80s store, probably because so many states didn't allow grocery stores to carry a full selection of liquor, or even any at all, at that time! I'm pretty surprised California, a state famous for over-the-top regulations, would have allowed this that long ago. (It wasn't until 2011 that Washington allowed all liquor sales in grocery stores, and there are still quite a few states that don't!)

Huh, maybe they need to move that giant cup over to the part of the store which has that messed up ceiling with the leaks!

I wonder if this was originally a beer and wine department or if maybe this was originally a service department. I suppose beer & wine could have been the original purpose if California laws allowed it back in 1983. Still, this kind of reminds me of that Food Town in a former Food Lion that I was talking about yesterday. I believe this corner was originally a bakery, but now it is Food Town's beer and soft drinks corner. That lettering might look like it is from Food Lion, but Food Town had that made themselves in the Food Lion fashion! Link: https://goo.gl/maps/iZrrMfKi1d17o97QA

    1. It could be, but everything here looks original, so I'm not sure! They didn't bother to match the original design for the health and beauty section (at least, I'm still assuming that wasn't the original sign for that area).

It is possible this lettering was elsewhere in the store, maybe where that blank sign is, and was moved, but that's just pure speculation.
