Stepping outside

I doubt anyone will be surprised by this given the boring design we saw on the exterior, but this mall's interior is quite bland too -- perhaps slightly more interesting than Macy's, but not by much. It is interesting to note how the columns in the central court space here match the ones on the Bon Marche's facade, apart from being painted white rather than having been left as exposed concrete. These cool old pictures show how this element formed the main design language for the mall when it was new; I'm particularly intrigued by the photo that seems to show a lower level to the mall, which there are no traces of today.

Ha, stepping outside into the indoor mall! There's nothing bland about what's in this photo! Okay, Kay Jewelers at a mall is nothing exciting, but those columns! They're almost more impressive inside than outside. Oddly enough, they remind me a lot of the exterior columns Safeway used at some of their Houston Safeway Super Stores in the late 1970s/early 1980s! Link: https://goo.gl/maps/dRq49sjCPN7oLKnSA

    1. I suppose... I've just seen columns like this (OK, maybe not quite this fancy, but still) so many times that I don't find them particularly noteworthy or impressive.
