Revolving Safeway

It's pretty weird to see revolving doors at a grocery store, since they don't play nicely with shopping carts... but of course, Safeway wouldn't want you taking their carts out onto the street anyway! Unfortunately, this one was broken and it appears that Safeway had given up on getting it working (something I'm all too used to at Safeways up here, though other divisions seem to generally do a better job with maintenance), but there was still one around the corner that was in service, just minus the silver panel with the Safeway wordmark.

It is indeed strange to see a revolving door at a supermarket! I wonder if this was done primarily to prevent people from taking carts out of the store as you say. If so, that's a good idea, but maybe it worked better in theory than in practice!

I see that sign asking people not to bring pets inside the store. I don't think it is common for people to bring pets into stores here in Houston, though some stores like Target seem to attract those who bring their pets more than others. I know I've heard Austin has a problem with people bringing their pets with them to shop and people blame California transplants for that, lol. I'm not sure. I can see the NW having an issue with this, but I've never seen it in your photos so maybe people are behaving themselves.

    1. It could be, but for ADA compliance they had to install regular doors right next to the revolving doors, and I don't think they had anything to stop people from taking carts out through the regular doors. I'm guessing the main reason was for energy efficiency, since San Francisco has infamously strict building codes, and the cart thing was an extra bonus!

People bringing pets into places was certainly a big issue around here a few years ago, but it seems to be less so now. Before COVID (probably around 2018-19), Safeway put up much larger signs at the entrances to all of their stores around here telling people not to bring in pets and that only service animals were allowed, but those signs were then replaced with messages about COVID policies and are now home to "now hiring" signs.
