The Dick's Sporting Goods store looks like it could have been built as part of the outdoor addition, but the building is actually one of the original anchors -- it was the original Nordstrom location (back when their department stores were still branded as Nordstrom Best and just a couple years after they got into the department store game by buying Best's), then when Nordstrom moved to a new space in the 00s, it was subdivided into multiple spaces including a giant Forever 21, then in 2017 when Forever 21 moved to a space within the mall itself, it was un-subdivided and fully remodeled to become a Dick's.
Interestingly enough, my local mall, Willowbrook Mall, has a Dick's Sporting Goods which very much looks like this Tacoma Dick's SG. In the case of the Willowbrook one, it was a brand new building. The mall had run out of anchor pads since Nordstrom Rack took the last available one at the time (Sears is now free, but the mall does not own the Sears property). Thus, they essentially tacked Dick's SG on to the side of the food court. It works, but it is strange having an anchor with their mall entrance on the back side of the food court! ReplyDeleteHave any Dick's SG near you closed temporarily for conversion into Dick's House of Sport or whatever they are calling their new concept? The one at Houston's Baybrook Mall closed several months ago for conversion and work continues on that. The remodeling is so extensive that Dick's SG actually opened a temporary replacement store in an old nearby Stein Mart. It's quite a strange situation! Here is a photo from inside the temporary store: https://goo.gl/maps/7aE6oMuiwQtsTX9r7
That definitely is odd! Kind of reminds me of the Everett Mall Ulta, except that one was carved out of the food court rather than tacked onto it.
DeleteHonestly, Dick's isn't a company I pay much attention to, so I'm not sure. That temporary store is very interesting -- I'm surprised they would go to such lengths to avoid keeping their regular store open during construction! I can't think of any time I've seen anything like that!
