Checkout corral

Just a year or two ago, the self checkout setup at this store, a corral arrangement with two different models of checkout machines, would have seemed quite odd, but this setup is becoming quite common, with Safeway working to increase the number of self checkouts in their stores (generally without significantly reducing the number of regular checkouts, unlike what other chains are doing). It still looks weird (and feels rather cheap) to have the different generations right next to one another like this, though. Off in the background, the "Guest Services" sign appears to be a low-ceiling variant for some reason (the text is smaller and the faux tile panel doesn't extend all the way to the ceiling trim); it's also a bit silly to have two signs reading the same thing right next to one another, but that's just the cookie-cutter nature of Safeway's Modern remodels these days (earlier remodels only included the hanging sign in stores that didn't have a wall to install the tile sign on).

  1. Those are a lot of tortilla chips especially relative to how many bottles of salsa they have out!

That Guest Services sign, the black on white one, looks excessively spaced out. I don't know if that is because the lettering is on a white background without any other color around it. Like some Artisan stores, there is just too much white around the front end here. They really could have done more here to make this look less bland.

This month's The Year of Kroger post at HHR is up and you'll have to look for your name in the photo captions! It is in relation to a Kroger signage fail...something I know you'll want to see! Link: https://houstonhistoricretail.com/2023/04/05/the-texas-city-krogers-golden-anniversary/

    1. Yeah, it's a combination of the white tile on white wall issue and the fact that they just ordered the wrong size of sign, I think! Definitely a bit of a fail in what's otherwise a remarkably well-executed Modern remodel.

Ha! I love finding grammar errors like that... now I have to wonder if there are any other bilingual Bountiful+ Trial/Travel markers out there with the same error! (Unfortunately, I don't think we have any bilingual Krogers around here.)
