Running Oom

The section of hallway beyond the Bass Pro Shops entrance serves as a small secondary food court (I say "small", but it has more food tenants than most entire malls I've visited in the US), with Baskin Robbins Kernels as the prominent corner tenant. I had never heard of Baskin Robbins Kernels before -- apparently Kernels is a Canadian chain of popcorn shops, and they have some combo locations with Canadian Baskin Robbins. Sounds like an odd combination, but this is the country that put Coldstone Creamery inside Tim Hortons stores...

  1. Hey, look, a Canadian cell phone store next to a Canadian (presumably) shoe store! I guess some American mall trends have made their way north, lol. Judging by the people in this photo, it seems the Baskin Robbins is doing good business. I have not heard of Kernels. Kernels sounds like a store that sells Linux kernels, lol.

Popcorn and ice cream seem like an unlikely combination. Someone is surely buying one or the other, but not both! Then again, here in Houston at least, Dunkin Donuts has never taken off as a huge brand, but they have been around with at least a few locations for over 50 years. For a while at least, Dunkin Donuts was co-branding with Baskin Robbins. I can't imagine too many people were buying hot coffee with ice cream, but maybe that combo works.

    1. Yeah, that is a little disappointing, but I suppose with the number of stores here, it's inevitable that there will be some shoe and telecom stores. Personally, malls having lots of shoe stores doesn't bother me, but the cell phone stores definitely do!

Ha, I wouldn't have ever made the connection to Linux! I agree, this definitely seems like a weird combo store. I didn't know Baskin Robbins and Dunkin Donuts had combo stores, but that makes sense since they're owned by the same company. I suppose ice cream being in a combined store makes some business sense, since ice cream is a fairly seasonal thing, at least in areas with cold winters!

  2. Dunkin and Baskin still do combo stores, and before the brand went away, Dairy Queen and Karmelkorn had combo stores as well!

    1. Interesting! I had never heard of Karmelkorn, let alone them having Dairy Queen combo locations, but this does seem like a complete knockoff of that concept!
