I guess hardware is grown-up toys for some people

It feels a little strange to have hardware and toys right next to each other like this -- one department is where kids go, and the other is full of stuff most parents would probably prefer their kids to stay away from! The biggest change around here is the deletion of the hardware counter, which means that the key machine is now completely open to the salesfloor -- that's common in remodeled Fred Meyers, but still feels quite strange to me.

  1. Interesting, Command hooks are a name brand so I wonder if Kroger should have put a trademark symbol next to that name! I'm guessing 3M won't complain too loudly unless Kroger starts selling their own brand hooks in this department.

Speaking of hardware and toys, did you see the announcement last week that Lowe's is going to start hosting birthday parties for kids? The parties will be focused on small building projects such as allowing kids to make wooden castles. It's a bit of an odd idea and the initial stores which will have this all look like wealthy urban areas including one in Dallas: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/lowes-launching-build-birthday-party-200742888.html

Speaking of Lowe's, do you remember a few months back I showed you a 3D video game-like map of a former Stein Mart that was for lease? Well, it came out today that the Stein Mart, which is in the same shopping center as my local Randall's, will have a new tenant soon...Lowe's! Specifically, a Lowe's outlet store. I didn't even know such a thing existed. From what I can tell from some of their other stores in other cities, it mostly seems like a place for Lowe's to sell scratch-n-dent and other open-box appliances. It's probably nothing too interesting compared to a Best Buy Outlet even, which is also in the area, but at least it is something.

    1. Blogger refused to let me comment at all last night, so we'll see what happens now...

Yeah, that is a bit strange, especially since they didn't even capitalize the name! I've seen this in quite a few Fred Meyers (and even some QFCs, if I'm not confused).

That's certainly an interesting idea! I believe Home Depot used to do something similar, though I don't know if they officially hosted parties. And Lowe's having an outlet store is news to me too!

  2. Huh, usually I'm the one who has trouble posting comments on Blogger, but I actually didn't have a problem posting a comment yesterday! I'm probably jinxing myself for today though, lol.
