Loads of lightbulbs

Around the corner and back into the hardware department, it's clear that Fred Meyer had a surprisingly huge selection of lightbulbs on this visit! All of the bins on the top shelf here made me realize that, oddly, this store lacks a dedicated storage department, a very common sight at Fred Meyer -- presumably they still have the products somewhere, but without any department signage.

  1. This Fred Meyer certainly has more bulbs than the typical Kroger supermarket around here, but even with that said, the Krogers around here have a pretty large selection of bulbs. They have more than you'd think a supermarket would have. I suppose this is a good thing because I generally buy bulbs from supermarkets these days and the last ones I bought were from Kroger!

It looks like the majority of the bulbs have purple boxes so they are probably Philips branded bulbs. Perhaps Kroger has some kind of deal with them since they seem to be a major outlet for Philips branded bulbs. Safeway seems to have GE branded bulbs. I don't know about Philips, but with GE at least, GE is no longer involved in actually making bulbs and I think some other company has the rights to use the GE name.

This reminds me of the legendary quote by former Northwest Airlines CEO Donald Nyrop: “If I want to buy an aircraft engine, I’ll go to Pratt & Whitney; if I want to buy a light bulb, I’ll go to GE.”

I guess Nyrop would buy his bulbs from Safeway, but not his aircraft engines, lol.

    1. Ha! I don't think GE actually makes any consumer products these days -- they've sold bits and pieces to all sorts of different companies. And even their remaining corporate entity is apparently going to split up, so there are sure a lot of separate companies using that name!

I miss Northwest -- while Delta has certainly improved their Seattle presence following the merger, Northwest was the first airline I ever flew long-haul on (probably on one of their DC-10s) and maybe even the first airline I few at all.
