The side entrance, unlike what you would see in, say, Walmart or Home Depot, doesn't actually lead directly into the garden center, but instead into the main salesfloor (well, kind of, we'll get back to that later) next to the garden center entrance. Fred Meyer historically had garden center registers in many stores (seasonally, at least), but I don't believe they use them anymore -- they aren't as bad as Safeway for short staffing, but I doubt they have enough staff for that.
