Looking up

These pictures show, even more so than the ones from my earlier visit, just how vibrant and busy this mall can get -- it may not be on the level of Seattle's most successful malls (such as Southcenter), but I'm willing to bet that this is the Spokane area's busiest mall. That's quite impressive for such a retro time capsule! Anyway, this picture is taken looking into the central court with my back to JCPenney -- I guess that makes three skybridges with fully-functional neon, since the two I took pictures of on my previous visit were both over the main corridor. This area has a ton of natural light, between the giant skylights and the full two-story window wall in the background; since this was March when the sun was still pretty low in the sky even at midday, the latter was where most of the light seems to have been coming from.

  1. The comment about this mall being a "retro time capsule" was a little hard for me to accept when I first read it! It is retro because of the neon, very obvious 1990s flooring, and so forth, but this mall is very much on the young side for indoor malls! I guess this mall is both young for a mall and a retro time capsule. It's hard to believe both of those can exist, but such is reality these days.

    1. This may not be news to you, but have you seen the aisle markers at the relatively new Puyallup Safeway? It looks like NW Safeways might finally be doing what other Safeway divisions are doing with Modern! Link: https://goo.gl/maps/o6bTxPKi1zqyrQLT8

    2. Ha, I felt a little weird saying that too, but it's still true, since this mall hasn't seen any major remodels over the years, unlike the vast majority of malls I've visited!

Yeah, that store's on my list to post hopefully not too far in the future. Sadly, those local landmark plaques have only appeared in the Seattle Division's 2 new-build stores built since the Albertsons merger, along with a small number of converted Albertsons -- not any pre-merger Safeways (well, there is one strange exception, which is also a store that I hope to post sooner rather than later).
