Speaking of things that have held on way past their expiration date, two and a half years after Macy's closed, and even after the remodel that was supposed to turn its space into offices and smaller retail spaces (all still vacant) was completed, virtually all of its signage is still hanging on, both on the exterior and down here in the tunnel. It's extremely strange to see this from a company that's still in business and not in bankruptcy or anything like that, and with how prominent the building and its signs are in the heart of Seattle's tourist district, I've definitely run into some very confused tourists who can't figure out why they can't find the entrance to Macy's! 😃

If you think Macy's is slow here, you should have seen the delay they had here in Houston when they closed their store at Northwest Mall in 2008! That closure was an unintentional one. That store was mildly damaged during Hurricane Ike in 2008 and never reopened. Macy's probably deemed the store to be in a dead mall and decided to not reopen it. The mall itself finally closed around 2018 or so. Anyway, the signage at the mall entrance and the outside of the store remained up until 2013 or 2014! Not only that, but Macy's never even took down their Labor Day Sale ads at the mall entrance that were up when the hurricane came through.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why Macy's was so tardy in removing their signage at Northwest Mall. There were rumors that Macy's was interested in fixing the store and reopening it, but that never happened. The Almeda Mall Macy's (Almeda and Northwest Malls are twin malls on opposite sides of Houston) was also damaged during the same hurricane, but Macy's fixed it up and even renovated it soon after the hurricane. The difference is that probably that Almeda was a stronger location than Northwest Mall. There may have been insurance reasons for it as well. Perhaps Macy's had to pretend to want to fix the store in order to get a payment. I don't know.
On the topic of things way past their expiration date, Macy's recently announced that they were opening Toys R Us departments in all their stores with a handful of 'flagship' locations with ~10,000 sq. ft. departments inside Macy's stores. One of those will be in Houston! Sadly, Seattle and the rest of the NW are missing out. I'm guessing the Houston location will be at The Galleria, but they have not said the exact location yet.
Wow, that's crazy! I would have thought Macy's cared more about their brand than that, but I guess not.
DeleteYeah, I had heard about that Toys R Us thing. If I want to visit a real Toys R Us, I can just drive up to Vancouver, where there are still quite a few of them! 🙂
