Standing directly under the giant Sprouts logo, here's a view all the way up to the front wall, again showing off the impressive openness of this store. The giant hanging scales and rustic produce displays really define the atmosphere that Sprouts was going for here -- I would probably have bad things to say if Safeway or Kroger were to use displays like this, but they work well for Sprouts.
Are those estimated weight stickers something related to Washington state measurement standards? I don't think I've seen that here.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of those hanging scales, they are a supermarket staple. That said, I was at a very ordinary Kroger the other day buying some bulk produce when I wanted to weigh my bag. I looked all around...no scales to be seen! After scratching my head for a few seconds and wandering around a bit, I finally found a little table-mounted scale sitting in a tomato bin. Not only was it very small, but the metric weights were in larger numbers than the imperial measurements!
Maybe those hanging scales are outdated. I don't think so, but maybe others disagree. That said, if there is some better alternative, Kroger needs to do a better implementing it. The one scale they do have seems like an afterthought. I prefer supermarkets who have ample scales that are easy to use like those hanging ones. I believe HEB uses digital hanging scales. Digital is not necessary, but even that's better than Kroger's solution.
Yeah, "estimated weight only" stickers are used everywhere around here, but they're generally nowhere near this prominent!
DeleteInteresting -- that's absolutely not the case in the northwest. Little table scales like you described are ubiquitous, at every major grocery chain (Safeway, Albertsons, QFC, Fred Meyer, etc.) and have been as long as I've been alive (I have fond memories of playing around with them as a kid!). Safeway even has them quite well integrated into their Lifestyle and later produce displays. The only time I've ever seen anything else in a major grocery chain store was when Kroger was experimenting with "Scan, Bag, Go" and put in fancy digital scales, but I think those are all gone now.
Around here, I think Kroger and Randall's might be the only ones with the table scales! HEB, Fiesta Mart, Food Town, and others are still using the old reliable hanging ones.
