The grocery section is definitely one of the areas where Target's decor has improved the most since the P09 era -- this area is just so incredibly bland in these PFresh stores, with only a few hanging posters to break up the produce/refrigerated area. Some early PFresh stores had somewhat more elaborate decor, but I don't believe I've ever seen that in person. The older produce displays are also rather cheap looking, though I'm not sure how commonly those are upgraded in remodels.
I'm guessing this used to be the electronics department prior to the mid-2000s or so. I miss those front corner electronics departments at Target stores. Somehow, both Target and Wal-Mart ended up moving their electronics to the center back which was a position Kmart used for their electronics departments years earlier. I guess this is a rare case of Target and Walmart copying a Kmart strategy!
ReplyDeleteYeah, probably. And that's interesting -- I remember that about Target electronics departments, but don't remember ever seeing that in a Walmart! I probably just didn't shop in enough Walmarts during the era when they used that layout.
DeleteThe old position of Wal-Mart's electronics departments wasn't the same as the old position of the Target electronics departments. Wal-Mart put their electronics in a mostly walled-in cube at the center of the store. This gave it a rather tight feel. Eventually, Wal-Mart moved their electronics departments to the center back of the store with a design similar to what they use now. Target mostly copied that design and location, but really it was Kmart that used that general location for their electronics way before Target and Wal-Mart did!
DeleteI actually do remember that about Walmart, now that you mention it! The old Port Angeles Walmart was set up that way, though I didn't realize that was a standard layout (that store was all weird inside, thanks to Walmart deciding to cram in practically a full supercenter worth of groceries inside a small non-supercenter while waiting for permitting to build the real supercenter they wanted).
