I mentioned earlier that these signs look fairly nice from the front, but that falls apart when viewed from another angle. That's because they're completely open on the sides, allowing you to see that they're just based around a standard, industrial-style florescent tube light fixture! That's why they all have to be the same size, and also makes the light coming through (and around) the signs rather uneven. I feel like these signs would look way better if they had just put solid (or perhaps translucent) sides on the sign boxes. Later implementations of this decor put the sign face somewhat closer to the wall (and much closer to the light), and seem to have used a somewhat different style of light fixture that led to better results.
Back when Greenhouse Krogers were still in their prime, the ones around here used to have a giant vertical fluorescent light fixture on the wall with blue light bulbs in the entry/exit vestibule. My assumption is that those were there as an insect deterrent since those vestibules were semi-exposed to the outside, but I'm not sure. Anyway, while the light fixture in your photo isn't vertical and blue, it does kind of remind me of those strange Kroger Greenhouse vestibule lights! The Greenhouse vestibule lights weren't exactly attractive especially if they were just bug lights. This does not look as bad, but it's still not a great look!
ReplyDeleteFunny! Those do sound like bug lights, though I've certainly never seen any that are that prominent. Perhaps the technology has improved over time so they don't need to be so big anymore.
