We're not in the normal Neighborhood any more

The upstairs is where this store gets really interesting, since it's where the general merchandise departments are. While Fred Meyer could have used normal Banner decor here (and they did use modified Banner for a few departments) and it would have looked normal since this is a separate level from the grocery departments, they decided to create custom Neighborhood-style signs for almost all of the general merchandise departments. This really makes me suspect that Fred Meyer didn't intend for this store to become a one-off, and wanted to have Neighborhood Fred Meyers elsewhere, something that never happened.

  1. The spacing of the characters/words here is rather odd, IMO. I also think saying 'electrical' might look better than electric. They certainly had the space to put in a longer word! Also, white on grey doesn't work so well here especially since the wall itself is grey. All in all, this is quite weird looking.

    1. Yeah, like I said in the next photo, this all feels rather unpolished, which adds to my feeling that this store was used as an experiment.
