Stepping back outside, here's a look back towards the entrance doors, with the Westlake Station entryway next to that. It's crazy to see how many people were out here even in the middle of winter in February 2020 -- the downtown area is finally starting to bounce back now, but for well over a year in 2020-21, this area was a ghost town.
I guess those people walking around didn't know it, but only a few weeks later, that area would be a ghost town! It's kind of strange looking back upon that time!
ReplyDeleteI saw something strange the other day and I forgot to share it with you. I found a print ad for Safeway in the 1970s that seemingly ran in the Portland area. Anyway, it has a large drawing of a Safeway store and it looks very much like our Safeway stores in Houston from around that time! I know you said that our Safeways look strange, but maybe they were built in the NW as well. Either that or Safeway just used a drawing of a Texas Safeway in a Portland ad! Here's what a similar Houston Safeway looks like: https://goo.gl/maps/AzjtfVy45nEMGEaA6
Also, check out this very vintage Colorado Safeway which I guess is still open like this. I know we've discussed retro Colorado Safeways before, but I don't know if this one came up: https://goo.gl/maps/UvSRye9JiZzxu1QT8

Yeah, that really makes these photos weird to look at, since the final days of this store were just a few weeks before the world fell apart.
DeleteInteresting to see that! I guess those Safeways just haven't survived to the present around here like some of them have in Texas. Too bad the ad doesn't mention where that store is.
That store looks pretty cool! Seems like Colorado is the place to go for vintage Safeways. I'm also not sure if I've seen that specific one before since there are quite a few of these cool old Safeways around there.
