Family portrait

This has to be one of my favorite pictures of this whole Macy's series, with the silhouetted family walking away through the virtually empty basement floor. It's interesting how Macy's kept all of the lighting and even the displays lit up on both the upper and lower levels, despite them being largely closed to the public.

  1. Yeah, that is a good photo. Will the last person out please turn off the lights!

That's some nice flooring there as well. It's a shame that stores designed to look this nice are more or less on the endangered species list!

I was poking around the Edmonds, WA area on Google Maps earlier for some reason and found that the Seattle area has another grocery store that Houston has in addition to Safeway and Kroger, 99 Ranch Market! I don't know if you've been down there. They are an Asian market, but one that attempts to appeal to western shoppers as well. It looks like there are at least a couple in the Seattle area. There are three in the Houston area that I know of including on in a former Fiesta Mart and one in a former greenhouse Kroger.

    1. Thanks!

Interesting -- I never realized 99 Ranch Market was a chain! I always assumed that Edmonds one was named that because it's on highway 99, haha! I've heard very had things about that store in Edmonds (I have a bunch of coworkers who live in that area and who like Asian supermarkets), which is why I've never bothered stopping in even though I've gone by there quite a few times.

    2. Yeah, it's always strange when you find out that a store that was assumed to be a local chain turns out to be a national chain! I didn't know that 99 Ranch Market was as large of a chain as they are until relatively recently. Most of the Asian supermarkets we have, and there are quite a few of them, are generally local stores/chains.

The Edmonds store does have a 4.0 rating on Google. That's not bad in the grand scheme of things, but that's generally lower than what the typical NW Safeway, QFC, and Fred Meyer gets. In that regard, perhaps they are not as well-received as those more established chains. As far as Houston 99 Ranch markets go, they seem to do better than the Seattle area stores. The Memorial City area store (ex-Fiesta Mart) even got a 4.4 (with a whopping 5,700+ reviews!) which is practically Publix-HEB level territory: https://goo.gl/maps/BaK3gfky4BtDjhuy9
