One interesting way that Walmart tried to normalize self checkouts (or at least that's what I'm assuming they were trying) was to have a special sign for the normal checkouts, labeling them "Assisted Checkouts", a term that I suspect was chosen to imply that they're intended for special circumstances. The sign almost makes it look as if they were intended to be set up as a single-queue setup (as with the self checkout pods), but no, it's just four individual lines, which were a bit of a mess with this many customers trying to use double-stacked checkouts (which themselves seem to be a bad idea when you have this many customers per checkout -- they only really work at places like Target because they rarely have both the front and back checkouts open at the same time).
Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of the double-stacked lanes either.
ReplyDeleteSadly, they seem to be something that Walmart is adding to quite a few stores, even in the newest checkout setup. Hopefully they'll work better when each individual checkout isn't crazy busy like here.
