This part of the store wasn't completely devoid of merchandise -- there was still a decent number of shoes remaining, though I have to imagine the selection was extremely picked over. Interestingly, the sign that used to be above the stairs to 3rd Ave was gone too -- I wonder if they sold off the lettering!
