Hammer time

The more I look at this icon, the more I think that Anonymous from Houston was right about this decor being (at the very least) highly inspired by clip art! It's funny to think about how we're kind of going back to those days in the current era, with emoji everywhere and icon-heavy decor packages being common (think Walmart's Airport decor and Target's P17).

  1. That's a good point about the relationship between tech industry design/art trends and what we see in non-tech store decor. It's a bit strange that things spill over from one domain to another, but I suppose it's to be somewhat expected given how much modern retailers are trying to be perceived as being tech companies (though in many cases they are tech companies in some way).

In the case of this 1990s Fred Meyer, I'm not really sure why there is a technology connection other than to say that Fred Meyer didn't want to spend much designing their decor, lol. Given some of the anthropomorphic decor elsewhere in the Fred Meyer, I'm surprised they didn't use clip art like this for the hard and softline departments!
