I can't decide if this is 70s or 80s panelling

For one last look at the interesting part of the store, here's a look back at the meat department counter. Would it have killed them to at least extend the service department decor through the rest of the meat alcove? It looks so awkward having it cut off like that...

  1. The darker wood colors are a 1970s thing, but the stereotypical 1970s decor was still fresh and being used into the early 1980s. Lighter wood was used more in the later 1980s.

I know you have said otherwise, but to me, this wood looks totally fake. Maybe the camera is playing tricks and it doesn't look as bad in person.

But, yeah, the stuck in a rain cloud look sure does start there on the right!

Speaking of Kroger and the 1970s, although I don't go to thrifts as much as I used to, I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about Houston-area thrift stores especially in certain parts of town including central Houston. With that said, boy was I in for a surprise today when I realized there is a thrift from a prominent chain of local thrifts in an old Kroger Superstore with a pretty well-maintained Superstore exterior. That thrift has been around for years, but I just didn't know about it or the Superstore Kroger. I'm glad this exterior is still around in Houston: https://goo.gl/maps/d3GjEb1RDrVKAb5s7

Probably of more interest to you is the somewhat recently remodeled Fiesta Mart that is near that thrift. Check out their real wood decor! They actually used old wooden pallets and turned it into decor! That's industrial decor done right! Also, those brown floors that they use are a retro touch in a way. It sure beats concrete! I'm sure you prefer this over Artisan! Link: https://goo.gl/maps/VgUjtpB4TaWBBmCs8

    1. Ah, I see. I think it's the diagonal style that looks kind of 80s to me for whatever reason.

Honestly, I really don't like that Fiesta Mart decor! 🙂 That is just so not my style with all of the crazy fonts and corrugated metal and such.

  2. The diagonal shape of the wood would probably be more of a 1980s thing where it would have been used with lighter color wood. Kroger can't even get their fake wood right, lol.

I can see why you don't like that Fiesta Mart decor. It is industrial decor and that makes it inherently distasteful, lol. Well, at least I think so. As far as industrial decor goes, I don't find it as bad as some of the industrial decor I see elsewhere. Still, it's nothing like this classic Fiesta decor which is thankfully still around at some locations. https://goo.gl/maps/tBsHH7NS7oEfv9Tr8

    1. Yeah, now that's the Fiesta Mart decor I like! I feel like it's about time for neon to make another appearance in grocery decor...

    2. I totally agree with you about the neon! It would be great to see that make a comeback. I'm sure stores will need to spice things up once current monochrome design trends get outdated and maybe neon will be an alternative.

That Fiesta with the neon competes with a nearby Krogertsons (a Grocery Palace Krogertsons no less I think, but I can't say for sure). That Krogerstons had 2012 decor, but got remodeled with Banner/Marketplace a few years ago. This is a pretty rare example of 2012 decor being replaced here in Houston at a store that wasn't storm damaged. At least I don't think that store took on damage.

Of course, the flooring at that Krogerstons is completely hideous. There's tremendous tile scar, the concrete is quite pitted in certain areas, and the concrete has a general dirty, rusty color to it. But, yet, this is just fine by Kroger's pathetic standards! Kroger has defaced this Grocery Palace! I don't know why anyone would shop here over the nearby Fiesta Mart. https://goo.gl/maps/PkZcWPMWFS3ZwCXK6
