Believe Meter

Another neat bit of former christmas decor found on this visit was the "Believe Meter" thing, which I didn't see at this store's final christmas season, but which was visible in the old pictures I linked the other day. This one was already over in the sold fixtures section, so someone must have really wanted it!

  1. I don't know how this would score on your Believe Meter, but I've been spending the last hour doing retail research on the UW Library website. Specifically, I was wanting to do some research on Egghead Software, the ~1990s PC software store that started in Bellevue, was then HQed in Issaquah, and then made the move to Spokane towards the end of their run. I shopped at their North Oaks location in Houston (there were actually two North Oaks locations, one that started as an outparcel at the former North Oaks Mall and then they moved to a larger location in a then-new Albertsons/Sears Hardware/Super Crown Books shopping center) very often in the 1990s as they had a good selection of software and had better prices than the mall software stores like Babbages and Software, Etc.

There's not much about Egghead online, but I found that the UW Library has their annual reports scanned as PDFs on their website. I recommend some of the earlier ones, like 1991 or 1993, if you want to see some store photos and get some information about the chain: http://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/cdm/search/collection/reports/searchterm/Egghead.com/field/creato/mode/all/conn/and/cosuppress/

The UW Library actually has a whole collection of annual reports for NW-based companies that you might want to check out: https://content.lib.washington.edu/reportsweb/index.html

Check out those QFC annual reports! The 1993 one has some great in-store decor photos: https://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/reports/id/43874

Anyway, if you know of any other resources that might have information about Egghead, let me know because like I said, I did shop there quite a bit and I liked shopping there. Of course, it's been ages since I've even bought software since almost all Linux applications are free. At least I can download Linux Mint from the UW Math Department server, lol.

    1. Ha, I think that means you've done more research into the history of retail around here than I have! 🙂

Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever heard of Egghead Software! But I'm sure there's a lot of cool stuff in those reports when I eventually have the time to go through them. It's nice that those are publicly posted -- almost everything the UW Libraries do is restricted to students and employees, so I wouldn't be able to see it anymore.
