Frozen in time

The frozen food department takes up a couple aisles in the middle of the salesfloor, seemingly in almost the exact same location as it was when the store was built. I'd be surprised if the cases were actually 60 years old, but they do look a bit like the produce and meat cases shown in the historic photos, so who knows!

It's interesting to compare this to a similar view from the Kent Marina Safeway. As cool as the Tradewell design is, I have to say, the interior atmosphere pales in comparison to the soaring ceilings of the Marina design. Perhaps it would have been different when this store was first built, but the relatively low ceiling of this store makes me significantly less impressed with this design than I originally expected.

  1. I agree. I also think whatever material or insulation that is they put on the arches diminishes the product. Maybe it even curtailed the size a little bit too, who knows.

    1. Yeah, I imagine that's part of it too. That's why it's hard for me to really compare between the two designs, since there aren't really any intact versions of either that still exist.
