Another classic department store trait, albeit one that's common for modern multi-level department stores, is the zigzag escalator core right in the center of the store. This is my only memory of this place from when I was a kid (before the upper-level closure) -- I remember being very impressed by the 8 stories of escalators, but also frustrated by how you needed to walk all the way around to continue up or down! These days, with just three floors and the main entrance at the middle level, the design is neither impressive nor frustrating.
