Sears Swoosh

The Sears here is certainly one of their most boring stores out there, even with the short-lived mixed case + swoosh logo used in the late 2000s. The history here is a bit more interesting, though -- this was the first part of the mall to be built, in 1969. It was a few years before anything else would be built here, and it wasn't until the mid-70s that the mall itself was built! Maybe this is just my limited knowledge of malls showing, but it seems odd to me for anchor tenants to be built and operational well in advance of the actual mall. Anyways, I visited this place in early 2019, since there were rumors of it closing and I wanted to see it beforehand; unsurprisingly, those rumors turned out to be true and it closed at the end of 2019 (though for some reason Google Maps has it as "temporarily closed").

  1. I'm probably not any more familiar with malls than you are, but I'm pretty sure that situation has taken place several times before. It's not always Sears either, but most of the time it seems to be, just since they've been around forever and often did freestanding stores.
