It's all over but the crying

This is it for me at the UW! "Graduation" isn't for another week and a half, but I had my last class today and don't have any finals, so no more school for me! And it feels super good to be done, of course 🙂

The first picture is what the UW is doing for graduation pictures this year -- it's a (rather poor) attempt at editing a cap and gown and grass background onto a random picture of myself that I had (I admit that it's slightly creepy with the face completely blurred out but I'm not about to post an actual picture of myself!). As you can see, it's not exactly a great setup -- my shirt is sticking out past the gown on each side, and the cap isn't big enough for my head! The second one is the only UW stuff I have -- I've never bought anything UW branded for myself, but these two shirts were given out at orientation and have been sleep shirts for me ever since.

I know this is supposed to be a bittersweet moment, but I've been waiting for this for a long time! I already have both feet firmly out the door after being a part-time student for an extra year and having spent most of that time working in my field. I do feel bad for most of my friends graduating this year, though, who are suddenly without jobs, but that's a different topic.

Back to the positive side -- I'm graduating, the stay at home orders are starting to be lifted, and I'm still working from home for the foreseeable future (that last one I have very mixed feelings on), so I should have a lot more time for my retail hobby from now on! That means I'll stick with my 4-a-day uploads for the foreseeable future, and should be able to start visiting stores again now (more backlog? yay?), so that should be good.

  1. Congrats on graduating! My sister graduated from college this spring too, so I know how weird of an experience its been for you guys this time around. The photoshopped cap and gown pictures are a bit odd, especially with the slight imperfections you mention!

It's a nice feeling when you graduate, feeling free from professors, papers, and all that fun stuff! I thought I was done with school last year (and was enjoying that feeling of freedom!), but now I've decided to go back again this fall for an extra year to finally get the degree I wanted (long story short, I ended up hating the subject I got my undergrad degree in, switched course to get an MBA after that, and now I'm getting another master's to finally make up for that undergrad degree).

    1. Thanks! It was certainly weird having a "missing" last quarter, especially with the gradual rollout of the stay at home (it wasn't until after the quarter started that we were told we weren't going back at all) making it so that I was never really able to say goodbye to everyone, but it worked out OK in the end.

Good on you for going back to school! It's always hard when you realize your original degree isn't going to work out (I know quite a few people who that happened to, including one who had an internship with my group at work and just stopped showing up to work one day), but it sounds like it's working out well for you in the end! I don't have the patience to get a business degree (or go back to school at all at this point), but the professors in my department love to talk about how good of a thing getting an MBA is.

  2. Congratulations! AFB pretty much covered all the inspiring stuff in his response, but yeah, this is definitely a big accomplishment. And certainly an unusual feeling time for it to take place, but I'm glad that you at least have a job lined up and are otherwise prepared for your post-college life already.

I'll agree with the consensus: that senior photo edit thing is weird! Ole Miss didn't do anything like that for us, which I suppose is just as well. I did actually take senior photos in the fall, but I was mostly using that as an excuse to get pictures of me in my suit for LinkedIn, so I wore my glasses for all the photos, thinking that when they offer them again in the spring I'd take some without. Oops. Can't even go to Portrait Innovations either, as they silently and suddenly closed all their stores earlier this year, before the pandemic. (At least that was good timing on their part, lol...)

Good luck with your job, looking forward to more content, and congrats again!

(P.S. -- good luck with your new degree too, AFB!)

    1. Thanks to you too! I'm so looking forward to just working and not doing school at the same time. I still have my fingers crossed for you having everything back to normal when you graduate next year, though who knows at this point (my job is already talking about having everyone work from home for up to another year, ugh!).

I'm not much of a picture person myself, so I wouldn't have had graduation pictures taken anyways, so that worked out fine. (I'm not a suit person either -- it was a big deal to get me wearing a dress shirt and tie for my most recent job interview!) I think this picture is something for the online graduation, but they haven't put out many details about how that's going to work. And I don't know what I would even do if I wanted to get a professional picture -- last time I did that, it was at Walmart back when they still had portrait studios and the Port Angeles one was still in the old non-supercenter building!

    2. You're welcome! Yep, definitely enjoy not having to do both at the same time :) Although that is concerning your job is looking at still working from home that far out! And thanks :)

That's good that it worked out that way, then. (And lol!) I'll be interested to hear how that online graduation thing works out. And yep -- portrait studios are certainly a rare breed these days!
