Front end

The front end of this store was, again, very light and airy. Interestingly, almost all of the checkouts in this store were self checkouts of various shapes and sizes -- even the things to the right of this picture that look like normal checkout lanes have self-checkout signs and lights on them. This store must have been an early adopter of the primarily-self-checkout model, which is now present in quite a few stores around here, most notably QFC and the small-format Targets. And as you can tell from all the decorations in this store, my Portland trip was around the 4th of July -- in fact, I visited this store (and many others) on the 4th itself.

  1. Earlier this year, Walmart debuted its first all self-checkout store in Miami at a new Neighborhood Market: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/article238937163.html

I kind of figured Walmart would try something like this eventually, as most of their Supercenters by me got rid of most of the staffed lanes for fancy looking self-checkout lanes with belts like the ones here.

    1. All self checkout? Wow, I didn't realize stores were going that far already! I'm all for that, though -- I always use self checkout if it's available. It feels like not that long ago that all you ever heard about was stores like Albertsons and Costco giving up on self checkouts, though as I was just saying, Albertsons/Safeway is now going all in on self checkouts again and Costco is starting some new trials of them again.
