Over the edge

OK, so this picture's kind of trash too, but it was the only one I got looking over the edge between the main store and the health-and-beauty section. The grade separation is a very awkward feature for a store like this, and it's the biggest sign that this building wasn't originally built with Target in mind. From what I can tell from the (very vague) plans I was able to find online, this area was originally intended to be a separate space from the rest of the store, meaning that it would make sense to have it match the outside grade rather than the grade of the rest of the interior. Even more interesting, the upper part of the store (and maybe this piece as well, I can't quite tell) seemingly wasn't originally intended as retail at all, but instead as office space -- probably part of the giant WeWork space that was originally planned for this building. I suspect that this is also the reason for the weird giant lobby space that doesn't make sense with the building's current tenants, but who knows.
